Ollie And His Quilt

I delivered Ollie's quilt on Sunday and his mommy was tickled with the finished results. She took him out yesterday for a few pictures with it.

This quilt is good enough for napping...and it looks like Ollie is about to fall asleep any minute.

Or maybe it's good enough to eat! Babies love to put everything in their mouths, don't they?

It's certainly big enough to share with a few sisters! I love those happy smiles :)

Ollie's Quilt-finished!

On May 1st I blogged about making Ollie a quilt. Ollie is my 7th grandchild-but my first grandson. My daughter, Melissa, (Ollie's mom) picked out the fabric and I picked the pattern and sashing/border fabric. This was a fun quilt to make and I am pleased with how it turned out.

This was the layout that I decided on. It was quick and easy to stitch and I thought that the fabric would be the focus and not the quilt pattern-which was my goal.

I even fussy cut some of the cute robots to showcase them in the blocks. They were so adorable that I had to feature them!

This is the top before I added the border. I was really on the fence about the border width. So, of course, I had to send pictures and ask my quilting posse. They said three inches-so, three inches it was. 

Here is the top, layered on the floor all ready for me to crawl around and pin together. This is my least favorite part of making a quilt. But, it is such an essential part of the process. 

Melissa was adamant that the quilting not look "girly". I can understand that-after so many girls, this has to be a BOY QUILT-nothing girly about it at all. I copped out and decided that an all-over meander would be quickest and easiest.

I loved the striped fabric and thought it was the perfect frame for the quilt, so I used it as the binding. All done! I took it to my daughter's house yesterday-it was a birthday party celebration for her oldest, who just turned 5. We didn't have a chance to take pictures of Ollie with his quilt yesterday, but Melissa is going to take a few and send them to me. I will post them at a later date. He is so cute and I know they will be adorable pictures. 

This is going to be a really cute nursery for Ollie. Melissa is making a crib sheet and curtains out of the same fabric line for his room. Ollie's aunt (my other daughter, Meredith) is painting some of the robots on a floor cloth for him. It's fun to take a fabric line and do a whole themed room with it!

Ollie's Quilt

I have started a new quilt.  This is not to say that I have finished any of the other projects that I have in various stages of completion (or should I say non-completion?). This is exactly what happens to me. I am going like gangbusters on a project and then life gets in the way and I have to set it aside for a bit while I do other things, like family weddings and new grandchildren. (I know~it's a tough life, huh?) Then a new project comes along and I don't seem to get back to the "old" project for weeks. OK, let's face the truth here~lots of times I don't go back to that project for months or even YEARS!!! I just lose my momentum and I find it hard to get excited about it again. 

But this new project is different. I will finish it and it will be done soon. I am making my newest grandbaby a quilt. My daughter picked out the fabric and I picked out the pattern. I think it's going to be really cute. And since Ollie is almost three months old, it's time this Grammy got cracking. 

I found a pattern called Taking Turns by the Happy Zombie. The pattern was featured in Quilts and More magazine last Spring. This was my inspiration. I decided that I wanted to make 11" blocks, so the quilt would come out the size I wanted it to be, so I tweaked the design. But I have to give credit to the the Happy Zombie! Her quilt is perfect when you have fabric that you want to showcase.

The fabric I am using is called Robotex by mint blossom for Northcott. Since several of the fabrics have a white background, I am going to do all of the sashing in a dark grey. I think it's going to be really cute. 

Here are the blocks cut out and placed on the design wall. I am pleased with the color arrangement. I think I have struck a good balance. 

I took close up photos of some of the fabrics. They just say "boy" to me. I love the green fabric-it gives a great pop of color to the quilt.

I just had to fussy cut some of the robot heads for the small squares. They look so cute! 

I am going to cut all my sashing strips now and get started. I hope to have this quilt finished to give to my daughter on mother's day.

Oliver-wedding style

My grandson, Oliver, was just two weeks old when his Uncle Matthew got married. He knew he needed to be well dressed for the occasion because all the ladies were going to be checking him out. So, his mom made sure he got lots of ooh's and aah's by making him a cute little outfit just for the wedding.
